Telecommunications
Relay Service (7-1-1)
The
Telecommunications Relay Service (TRS) allows
people who are deaf, hard of hearing, deaf-blind
or speech disabled to communicate with anyone
using a regular telephone. This is done by using
a keyboard machine called a text telephone (TTY)
or a Telecommunications Device for the Deaf
(TDD) to send messages over the telephone network.
A Communications Assistant reads the typed message
of the TTY/TDD user to the person using a regular
telephone. The Communications Assistant then
types the response of the regular telephone
user to the TTY/TDD user. All calls are handled
with strictest confidentiality.
TRS is available 24 hours a day, every day of the year. And there is no additional charge for using this service; you only pay the local or long distance rates applicable as though you had dialed the individual directly. Feel free to call our business office if you would like more information about this service.
Beginning July 1, 2004 in New York, customers
receiving calls via the Relay Service will be
able to see the name and/or number of who's
calling if you subscribe to any of the Call
ID.services. Similarly, if you call someone
who subscribes to Call ID service using the
NY Relay, your name and/or number will show
on the called party's display unit. Call ID
on Relay also preserves any special call features,
such as Call Blocking and Anonymous Call Rejection.
